Biomass to Energy – The World Market for Biomass Power Plants

Electricity generation from incinerating biomass is increasing throughout the world. Over the past five years, almost 800 power plants with a capacity of more than 8,700 MWel went operational. In Europe alone, there are more than 1,000 active biomass power plants. In the five years to come, a worldwide growth of up to 12,000 MWel can be expected.

The market driver for this increase is the global development of renewable energies. Biomass is, in contrast to water, wind and sun, the only renewable energy source that does not depend on the weather and guarantees a continuous energy generation.

The increasing number of feed-in tariffs in many countries throughout the world will stimulate electricity generation from biomass in the years to come. Almost all of these subsidisation systems are paid by the electricity clients, which makes them comparatively independent from national budgets and thus from the financial crisis.

In the light of this development, ecoprog and Fraunhofer UMSICHT analysed the global market for biomass power plants in detail. In doing so, the project partners did not only bring their own market knowledge into the study. We also integrated public authorities, associations and companies from the industry. The result is an up to date analysis of figures, facts, estimations and trends in the worldwide operator and plant market of electricity generation from biomass.

The study “The World Market for Biomass Power Plants” includes:

  • A detailed analysis of all essential political, economic, managerial and technical trends in the construction and operation of biomass power plants.
  • A concrete differentiation of the current and future market volumes by country up to and including 2015, based on a transparent and comprehensible methodology.
  • A project list with more than 500 new construction projects, of which more than 130 are currently under construction, more than 70 were approved and more than 300 are being planned or discussed.
  • A description of more than 1,800 operational biomass power plants, including essential technical data like information on capacities, manufacturers, commissionings and contact addresses.
  • A description and analysis of the most important operators and plant manufacturers of biomass power plants throughout the world.

In addition to the study, every client gets access to the following add-ons for one year:

  • ecoprog BtE Monitor: Update on current construction and modernization projects worldwide. The dispatch takes place every 14 days.
  • ecoprog BtE Project Tracker: Complete list of all known projects worldwide, including status, capacity and commissioning.
  • ecoprog BtE Archive:  Access to all monitor messages since the first edition in September 2010.

The study is available in German and English starting from 4,400,- euros plus VAT. Subscription rates on request.
