The European Market for Pumped-storage Power Plants

In the next ten years, the market for pumped-storage power plants will grow like never before. Until 2020, more than 60 new plants with an installed capacity of about 27 gigawatts will be constructed – which represents about the half of the current pumped-storage power plant stock and an investment volume of almost 26 billion euros.

The main reason for this beginning boom is the growing share of renewable energies of the total electricity generation – in the future, most notably, load fluctuations caused by energy from wind power and photovoltaics have to be compensated by storage.

The construction will focus on countries with proper natural conditions for pumped-storage power plants. Hence, first and foremost, facilities will be built in mountainous countries like Austria, Switzerland, Spain or Norway.

In the light of this development, ecoprog analysed the European market for pumped-storage power plants in detail. In doing so, we have not only included our own market knowledge, but also the expertise of public administrations, operators and plant manufacturers.

The study “The European market for pumped-storage power plants 2011/2012” includes:
