The market for biogas plants in Germany
In the field of renewable energies, the production of biogas from biomass is one of the fastest growing markets. The number of biogas plants in Germany doubled during the last five years up to 3,850. Furthermore, the installed electrical power more than quadrupled.
In 2007, the biogas industry experienced a decisive break. Most notably, costs for substrate increased drastically and caused an interim low as well as the cessation of biogas projects in Germany. Some already existing plants reached their limits of profitability.
The legislator reacted to this new situation by amending the Renewable Energies Act (in particular, shifting the focus on the recovery of residues) and the regulation for the access to the gas distribution system. Furthermore, the Renewable Energies Heat Act was adopted. However, the future for biogas remains partially unclear after the paradigm shift in 2007.
In the light of this development, ecoprog GmbH and Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technologies UMSICHT analysed the market for biogas plants in Germany in detail.
