Market study on municipal waste in the UK
The British waste market is currently the most dynamic in Europe. At present, disposal contracts with a market value of more than 30 billion GBP are in the contract award process. Over the past months, contracts with a similar volume have been awarded, further ones were announced. Within the framework of these awards, up to 70 waste treatment plants are needed. Already, there are concrete plans for around 25 waste incineration plants, 25 mechanical biological treatment plants and additional refuse-derived fuel power plants. Further investments will be made in the segments of material recovery and the development of separated waste collection.
This takes place against the background of implementing European waste legislation, especially reducing the amount of waste going to landfills. The landfill tax is the most important instrument of this implementation. Since 1996, the tax has sextupled to the current amount of 48 GBP per ton of municipal waste – and it will continue to increase in the years to come, up to at least 80 GBP. In the light of this development, ecoprog GmbH and the Centre for Resource Management and Efficiency at Cranfield University analysed the disposal market for municipal waste in the United Kingdom in detail. The evaluation includes, amongst other instruments, a written survey of more than 470 waste authorities in the United Kingdom.

The “Market Study on Municipal Waste in the UK” includes:
