Market Study On Household Waste Management In Germany 2007/2008
Household waste is the highest-volume market in the waste industry; in most regions, the biggest contracts awarded in the waste management industry are for the collection and disposal of household waste. As the leading market, household waste collection is also the starting point for the management of other fractions of waste like paper and cardboard, lightweight packaging and even industrial waste.
Due to implementation of the Technical Guidelines on Municipal Waste (TASi), the waste industry and household waste market are changing. There are bottlenecks in waste handling and thermal treatment of the high-calorific fraction; at the same time, future overcapacities are likely as a result of a surge of projects. This situation is accompanied by a concentration process in the industry, which will continue into the future.
In view of this development, ecoprog GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technologies UMSICHT has conducted a detailed analysis of the household waste disposal market in Germany. The study includes, amongst other things, a written survey of over 750 public waste management organisations across the entire federal territory.

The market study provides precise information about the waste management industry:
- Maps and detailed data on the 1,000 or so disposal relationships in household waste collection at district and municipal level, including data on disposers, their market shares and contract periods
- A list with more than 220 known impending contracts for household waste collection over the next 5 years
- Presentation of the most significant waste volumes at federal state level and for the majority of rural districts and joint-action corporations in Germany
- Detailed data on the 120 or so waste incineration and mechanical-biological treatment plants, including operators, market shares and contact addresses
